Class Description

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a slow and soft style of yoga which allows you to stretch and nourish the deeper connective tissues such as ligaments, bones and joints which are harder to target in more dynamic (yang) styles of yoga. Whilst all types of yoga is beneficial and I love dynamic practices, Yin can be a very calming and healing practice which gives you the opportunity to press the pause button, go deeper and rejuvenate the body and mind. Through holding specific poses for longer periods of time you can also stimulate the flow of chi (vital energy force) through the meridian lines (a Chinese medicine concept) which can release any energetic blockages that may be manifesting (or has the potential to manifest) in physical, mental or emotional being.

Benefits of Yin Yoga:

  • Stretch the deeper connective tissues such as Fascia, ligaments, bones and joints
  • Improve joint mobility and increase lubrication between joints
  • Increase circulation
  • Improve flexibility especially hips, pelvis and lower spine
  • Nourish meridians and the organs in which they travel unblocking the flow of vital energy throughout our body
  • Calm the nervous system by triggering the parasympathetic side of the nervous system
  • Balance the mind and body

Ashtanga yoga has 5000 years of history and is a powerful practice linking postures and full rhythmic breathing. Throughout the practice deep internal heat is created (known as the fire practice) which purifies the body on a cellular level whist enhancing levels of concentration, relaxing the mind and internal energy locks strengthen the nervous system.
A full primary series Ashtanga class is 90 minutes (however shorter versions are possible) and traditionally incorporates the following:

  • A chant to thank people who walked the path before us
  • Controlled breathing is very important through each asana which if one can control the breath, one can control the mind which will have a calming effect
  • Engaging Bandas to allow energy flow and movement in one direction
  • Primary Series – A set sequence of asanas
  • Savasana – relaxation to let the body and mind settle and absorb the energy created during the class
  • Closing Chant – to seal the work done and offer efforts to improve the state of the world

A deeper understanding of the history and philosophy of Ashtanga does not only improve your physical practice on the mat, but can become a way of life. Learning about the Eight Limbs (Ashtanga) yoga and weaving the knowledge particularly the yamas and niyamas into everyday life can be transformational.

Reiki Drumming

Reiki is the Japanese word for universal life force. By channeling energy from the universe (generally through the hands), It can be a deep relaxation technique that reduces stress and promotes healing. Reiki re-activates the body’s natural energy system, bringing you back into balance on every level, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Drumming for healing and meditation is an ancient practice and goes back thousands of years, the power of sound over the body and spirit is well known in tribal cultures. Scientific research confirms that drumming (even for short periods) can influence brain activity, bringing you into the meditative alpha state and can reduce stress. Study also shows that drumming can increase the production of the body’s natural painkillers and can therefore help control pain and enhance healing.

Singing Bowls

We will play our singing bowls bathing you in the beautiful sounds and vibrations which has a profound effect on mental peace, relaxation and healing. Singing bowls have travelled across the Himalayas, through the mountains, valleys, along ancient trade routes and have been used for sacred sound making, serving food, healing and purification for thousands of years. They are made up of 8 metals (Copper, Tin, Zinc, Iron, Lead, Gold, Silver and Mercury) consisting of many beneficial minerals and these days predominantly work through sound vibrations and frequency that is transported to the cellular level of the human body.

Benefits of using Singing Bowls

  • Offers vibrations into the body which induces a variety of waves and evokes a sense of calm and peace
  • Stimulates the blood vessels, lymphs, nerves, veins and muscles to open up blockages and loosening tension in the body
  • Relaxes the body and releases pain
  • Helps the body generate a positive flow of energy
  • Helps with stress, depression, insomnia, menstrual pain, ear problems, sinusitis etc
